Switzerland has now joined Germany at the top of Group A, following the first round of games at Euro 2024. This leaves Hungary and Scotland with significant ground to make up as they continue their campaigns in the tournament.
Switzerland got off to an ideal start in Euro 2024 Group A by edging out Hungary with a 3-1 victory. They now join Germany at the top of the group standings, after the hosts had thrashed Scotland 5-1 in the tournament opener the previous night.
Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer were pivotal for the Swiss, both scoring in the first half to give their team a comfortable lead at the break. Despite Dominik Szoboszlai setting up Barnabas Varga to narrow the deficit for Hungary with a well-taken goal, Switzerland ultimately held on. Breel Embolo, returning from a season marred by injuries, sealed the win with a beautifully executed chipped finish.
Duah opened the scoring early in just his second international appearance for Switzerland, firing a low shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi after being set up by Aebischer. Aebischer then doubled the lead just before halftime, evading Attila Fiola's challenge to curl a precise shot into the bottom corner.
Varga's diving header in the 66th minute, from Szoboszlai's cross, briefly ignited hope for Hungary and their passionate supporters, marked by celebrations that included flares among the fans in black T-shirts. Hungary pushed hard for an equalizer but couldn't breach Switzerland's defense again.
With this result, Switzerland currently sits second in Group A, trailing only behind Germany, who dominated Scotland earlier with a commanding 5-1 victory in the tournament's opening match. This defeat marks Hungary's first loss in a competitive game since September 2022.
